Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: From Foundations to Products

October 12 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm BST

Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: From Foundations to Products

The listed talk is one of two to be presented at this year’s BCS Lovelace Lecture 2021. See below for full details.

“This year’s Lovelace lecture will consist of two lectures given by the winners of the 2020 Lovelace medal.”

“Talk One”

“Professor Ian Horrocks, University of Oxford”

“Title: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning: From Foundations to Products”

“In this talk I will review the development of commercially successful Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) systems and their genesis in foundational research. I will trace the evolution of KRR systems from logical and algorithmic foundations, through academic prototypes and standardisation to robust and scalable systems that power applications in areas as diverse as search, healthcare, financial services and manufacturing. I will discuss the barriers and milestones encountered along the journey, and lessons learned about the exploitation of research.”

“Talk Two”

“Professor Nicholas Jennings CB FREng, Loughborough University”

“Title - Multiagent systems: The Dream, the Reality”

“Multi-agent systems first emerged as a research topic in the late 1980s. A key driver behind the emergence of the field was the idea of building systems that actively worked on behalf of human users in the pursuit of those users’ goals. It was envisaged that these systems - agents, as they became known - would also interact with other agents, both human and artificial, as they carried out their tasks. The challenges raised by this vision have largely shaped the field of multi-agent systems to the present day. In the first part of this joint talk, we will describe in more detail the ideas that led to the emergence of the field, and how the field evolved, through to the present day, where we all carry with us a manifestation of the thirty year old dream, in the form of Siri, Alexa, and Cortana. In the second part of the talk we will describe our current research agenda - Wooldridge, on techniques to understand the dynamics of multi-agent systems, and Jennings, on human-agent partnerships.”
