Standardizing How We Talk About Standards: Developing SSOS, the Standards-Specific Ontology Standard

“That may sound really geeky–and I guess it is. But what it’s really about is breaking down a Tower of Babel and enabling discoverability and interoperability. You know the old saw: the great thing about standards is that there are so many of them. No joke. There are hundreds of standards organizations, but most of them think and talk about their standards in their own ways. This new ontology describes a limited set of core concepts and relationships important to standards in general, providing a foundation to build on. That will enhance discoverability and facilitate interoperability between standards. Which is ever more important today: as folks recognize how important it is to base their work and tools on standards, a given organization actually uses many different ones. Your work, and the tools and technologies you use, are based on more standards than you probably realize.”

“This webinar will be presented by the co-chairs of the NISO Standards-Specific Ontology Working Group, Cord Wischhöfer from DIN Software in Berlin and Robert Wheeler from ASME in New York. They’ll talk about the process of creating the SSOS ontology, of course, but they’ll also provide insights on what an ontology is and why it’s more powerful than the simpler taxonomies most of us are familiar with. Jack Bruce from Access Innovations will give you a look at how the ontology is actually created. As semantics (along with standards!) become ever more important to our information infrastructures, ontologies will become increasingly common.”
